Welcome To The Walter Raleigh Hotel Youghal
The 18th Century Walter Raleigh Hotel is spectacularly located on the sea front promenade in the famous heritage town of Youghal, East Cork, Ireland.
Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the most dynamic and colourful characters of the Elizabethan period, but the new owners of his namesake hotel in the lovely heritage town of Youghal could probably give him a run for his money for both character and dynamism.
Grace and Nick Ryan were persuaded by a friend of theirs – a Youghal native – to take a trip down from their home in Meath to have a look at the hotel, which was for sale. Never having been to this Victorian seaside town before, they promptly bought the Walter Raleigh Hotel in late November of last year, closed the premises on New Year’s Eve and began renovation work on January 2nd 2013. They then reopened just three weeks later, having entirely replaced the hotel’s kitchens, and renovated the lobby, dining room and bar to a standard this pretty seaside hotel hasn’t seen since her glory days.
‘The Walter’, which originally opened as a hotel in 1902, has been a major part of the social life and fabric of Youghal during living memory, and this new and stylish version of the Walter Raleigh Hotel is sure to appeal equally to locals and visitors alike.
On the sea front with stunning views over the promenade, the Walter Raleigh Hotel overlooks the Atlantic ocean just across from the bandstand at the GreenPark, one of the town’s most immediately recognisable beauty spots. An easy commute from Cork city, Youghal, with its magnificent seven kilometre Blue Flag sandy beach, championship golf course, superb fishing on the Blackwater, sea angling and major visitor attractions close by has always been a favourite holiday destination, and now the town has another reason to visit.
